Project Description

When we first met with this client, they described their “dream” kitchen as country chic. They have both lived on farms since they were born and love the warmth, inviting feel of a country kitchen but still wanted the kitchen to have an updated, modern feel. Both clients love to cook, so function was also very important.

When Mrs. Carr shared with us that she had some restored barn siding from the barn she and her mother grew up on, we knew this had to the be center piece of this space. We chose to, literally, make this the center piece of the kitchen by designing an island that would be wrapped in the wood. This would be the focal point from the main entry (back door), as well as the eating area in the kitchen and the den.

This island would also be used as the main work space, an eating area and house the microwave and dishwasher. To allow for an island large enough to meet all of these needs, we decided to open the kitchen to the den. This also helped the home feel larger and less closed off.

While the client initially saw another design of ours that included navy blue cabinets, we ultimately selected a lighter custom paint gray/blue and white two-tone cabinet layout, to allow the barn wood to really stand out. The clients also really loved the classic look of the white subway and carrara (quartz) tops, but also how the crisp simplicity really fit with their farm home style.

We are so pleased with the final outcome and love how this simple kitchen is so full of unique touches that make it one of a kind.
